I am going to start this post as recently i posted some threads on different webmaster forums to review the design and functionality of OnlineTemplates.org which is on 1st Google Page for the keyword “web 2.0 template” “web 2.0 templates” and this is from 35 mil pages. Also it ranks very good on other search engines and for other terms too. Now let’s get to the real point.
You don’t need to have a 650-621 or a 70-630 to you credit to know the importance of domain names. Even starters who are just beginning their 642-432 series and are on a basic course like 70-282 know this. Although the fine appreciation comes after E20-001.
I have been accused as being “immoral and misleading” . Why? Because i use a .org domain for selling my templates. Hmm…why do i use a .org domain?
Well if the onlinetemplates.com or web20templates.com or any other extension was available at that time be sure i would of bought them. Let’s see some opinions from different forums, but first i have to quote Wikipedia which is( at least wants to be) the mother of all explanations.
.org was one of the original top-level domains, established in January 1985, originally intended for use by organizations that did not meet the requirements for other gTLDs.
Now anyone can register a .org domain. .org was the domain commonly recommended for use by individuals, although .name and .info are now alternatives.
The .org TLD is mostly associated with non-profit organizations. In addition to its wide use in the charitable field, it is often used by the open-source movement, as opposed to the .com domains used mostly by companies.
I have bolded those words to stand out because it never says “must” or “have to”.
Let’s see some opinions on different forums:
” Also, the domain name: onlinetemplates.org. You aren’t exactly a non-profit organization, which is implied by the .org.”
“….you shouldn’t have a .org domain, is misleading and immoral; supposadly they’re going to crack down on policing it (how idk)… like when the .post domain is released it won’t be distributed like the .org domains (only the government will be able to hand them out, due to the mass abuse of domains).”
This is from a 17 years old kiddo:
“It only states MOSTLY because it’s been abused… it’s supposed to only be non profit organisations, but there are a few who’ve not abused that and now it’s mostly associated with non-profit organisations but there are a few exceptions….. If your misleading with the domain… what else are you misleading about?”
And now some good reactions, there are about 50 but i’ll put only a few here:
“It’s not immoral. An organization can make money too.”
“An organization is not a charity. There are special types of organizations like “non-profit”, which is a different category all together. Even those actually make a lot of money, they just claim that all of the revenue goes to maintaining their “non-profit” organization like salary, rent, etc…”“yup, i agree with you.
immoral just too “hard” in this case.again, organization is not about a “charity”.”
“The original purpose was to categorize, now there is no difference”
“In my opinion that is fine unless you are using the .org malicously like trying to use that with a site that claims to be some sort of charity organization asking for money.”
“I really don’t think it matters. It isn’t unethical by philosophical standards at least… You can get a .tv extension without being from …whatever country TV is an extension for.”
Now let’s see about this .tv history
As wikipedia says again:
“.tv is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for the island nation of Tuvalu.”
“Except for reserved names like .com.tv, .net.tv, .org.tv and others, any person in the world can register a .tv domain for a fee. The domain name is popular (and thus economically valuable) because it is an abbreviation of the word ‘television”
Now let’s see about the .ws domain. Same wikipedia:
“The .ws domain is an abbreviation for “Western Samoa”, the nation’s official name when two-letter country codes were standardized in the 1970s.”
Oh really? Well i saw some registrars saying that it comes from WebSite to attract more customers.
if i invent a .tanicos extension tomorrow and say …this extension is only for people i choose will that stop you registering the domain you want with that extension? i don’t think so…
what do you think?
if tomorrow you can register let’s say pizza.org would you sell pizza?or use it for non-profit?

i will agree with you here…because everything on the www means marketing and gets money too.
non-profit organizations - well they have to be sponsored by somebody right?

WWW does not radically money. Everyone wants to have their opportunity to get free money over the Internet. That is such a shame. I blame those who still thinks that WWW was made from porn-marketeers and that it is useless without economic strategy. Fist meaning of the Internet was to communicate in case of a major human disaster (say WW3). It was built freely and what you see is not what you get over the Internet (Yeah i’m out of scope just to bash wysiwyg a little). Still today anyone who can program can code an homepage and start building things at a cost of… web hosting about 140$ US a year.
