Web 2.0 Design

Having a good web site design is one of the most important things for your website. Here are some tips to make sure you have a good design:

  1. Page load time. If your pages are not loading fast, your visitors will probably leave your site due slow loading pages. When you design your site, make sure it can be loaded fast using a 56K modem.
  2. Easy to read text. The text size on your pages should be big enough. I recommend to use white background and black text to be safe.
  3. Navigation menu. Your visitors should find your site easy to navigate. Each link should be clearly identified as such and graphic navigation elements like buttons and tabs should be easy to read and use. Visitors might leave your site if they can’t figure out how to navigate your site.
  4. Layout and Design consistence. Make sure you are not changing your web site design and layout to often, otherwise people might think they’re on a different website.
  5. Don’t use music and sounds. Not all people like to be listening to music while they surf the net. They might even be surfing at their job and of course they don’t want their bosses to know what they doing.
  6. Web site design for browser compatibility. Make sure your site is viewable in Mozilla Firefox and other internet browsers. Sites that target markets like technology should be more careful, since readers are more likely to use the newest browsers and gadgets like PDAs.
  7. Design for all screen resolutions. You may like to surf in 1240×1080 with your new screen, but some people still use 800×600, or even 640×768! A site that looks perfect in high resolution may turn out to be impossible to view correctly in 800×600.

If you are not sure if you are doing something right, just test, test, and test! Ask for your friends or family opinion. Ask them to check your site and see if they find it easy to navigate.
